What’s Holding Adults Back from Getting Braces?

What’s Holding Adults Back from Getting Braces?
Posted on 09/01/2015

Whether or not you personally wore them back when you were a kid, braces are a part of growing up. We generally associate braces with our teenage years, the time in life when most people receive orthodontic treatment. Think back to school assemblies where it seemed like every kid had either braces or a retainer; braces were like of a rite of passage as teens and pre-teens stumbled through the awkward phase of puberty.

Adults who did not receive any orthodontic treatment, who didn’t need to be seen back then or whose issues only became manifest later in life, may be hesitant to get braces now because they are embarrassed and think braces are only for teenagers. This, however, simply isn’t true. There are now more options available for adult braces today than ever before! So what type of braces are best for adults?

Clear Braces

Clear braces are made of ceramic and come in many different levels of transparency. The level that is best for you depends on your lifestyle and is decided in a consultation with your orthodontist. The purpose of these types of braces is to blend in with the natural color of your teeth so they can be straightened fairly discreetly. Clear braces are difficult to spot from a distance, and sometimes remain invisible even from quite near.

Ceramic braces are able to blend in with the same pigment of your teeth, being hidden from view at a distance and oftentimes up close as well. This is what makes them such a popular choices with adults and teenagers alike.

Lingual Braces

Another option for braces that not very many people know about are lingual braces. These braces are very similar to traditional metal braces, except for the fact that they are hidden behind the teeth nearest the tongue instead of across your teeth, bonded to the front. Lingual braces are durable and hidden from view at the same time, making it an optimal choice for straightening your teeth.

Invisible Braces

Invisible braces, sometimes called aligners, are a new development in orthodontics. The popular method of Invisalign are ultra-discreet. Invisalign uses aligners which are clear plastic molds generated by digital modeling that are worn for about two weeks before being exchanged for a slightly different set so that they can push the teeth into place over time. The great thing about aligners is that they can be taken out of your mouth at any time. Though they shouldn’t be taken out for long periods of time, they can be removed when eating, brushing your teeth, or even for important meetings.

Adult braces are becoming much more common, and there are many options available that you are able to choose from. If you are shying away from the traditional metal bracket braces and wanted to explore other options, then these invisible braces might be right for you.
