So you’ve selected Invisalign to help you straighten your teeth and improve your smile. Congratulations! Invisalign is one of the most subtle and effective orthodontic methods, and is a great choice for adults and teenagers alike. Just because it’s a great choice, however, doesn’t mean that you won’t have to do your fair share to make your treatment a success. Check out these Do’s and Don’ts for tips on how to make the most of your Invisalign experience.

Do follow what your doctor says. He or she has the training and experience to know exactly what your teeth need, and to create the perfect treatment plan for your individual case. Put your trust in your orthodontist and do what they say.

Do keep your trays clean. Instead of brushing around brackets and trying to floss between wires, Invisalign makes it easy to keep your orthodontia clean. Be sure to clean your trays on a daily basis for best results—this will keep your mouth as clean as possible, as well as help keep staining to a minimum.

Do be patient. Just like regular braces take time to give you real results, Invisalign also takes time to get your teeth straight. Hang in there and you will see results. Sometimes it can take a couple months before you visibly see a difference in your smile—but your teeth will get straighter as you follow your treatment.

Don’t skip hours on your aligner trays. A lot of patients don’t put enough importance on the number of hours the trays are in their mouths. Be sure to follow the full 22-24 hours a day your doctor recommends. If you cut corners, your treatment timeframe could be affected.

Don’t be afraid to get in touch with your orthodontist. If you have questions or concerns, your doctor can help. In fact, that’s why your doctor is there. Be sure to get in touch if you need answers, or if things aren’t feeling quite right.

Forget to brush every time you eat. This may sound like a lot of brushing, but in order to keep staining down, it’s necessary for a successful Invisalign experience. Just like with regular wire braces, keeping your teeth healthy and clean is critically important during your orthodontic treatment.
